Developers at Mozilla have announced their intention to remove FTP protocol support from their Firefox browser. This means that in the future, users of this popular web browser will not be able to upload files or view content from any resources using the FTP protocol.
“We are doing this for security reasons. FTP is an insecure protocol, and there is no justification for making it more preferable for file uploads than HTTPS. Moreover, part of the FTP code is very old, insecure, and quite complex to maintain. In the past, we have found numerous vulnerabilities in this code,” commented Michal Novotny, a software engineer at Mozilla Corporation.
According to available data, Mozilla will remove FTP support from its browser with the release of Firefox 77, expected in June of this year. It is worth noting that users will still have the option to upload files via FTP. To do this, they will need to manually enable protocol support in the browser's settings menu, which opens when entering about:config in the address bar. However, in the future, developers will completely eliminate FTP support from the browser. This is expected to happen in the first half of 2021. After this, Firefox users will no longer be able to use the FTP protocol.
It is worth noting that earlier, the developers of the Chrome browser announced their intention to drop FTP protocol support as well. Google representatives reported this back in August of last year. FTP support will be disabled by default in Chrome 81, the release of which is due to the coronavirus outbreak, and the next version of the browser will completely cease to support FTP.
