The release of the cataloger, viewer, and editor for eBooks Calibre 5.0 has taken place. Key changes in the new version include a new ability to highlight, annotate, and add notes to text fragments, as well as a complete transition to Python 3.
In the new release, you can highlight text of interest and apply color highlights as well as formatting styles (underline, strikethrough...) and your own notes. All this information will be saved in the Calibre library, and in the case of EPUB documents — within them. It works not only in the application but also in the browser.
In addition, all Calibre applications have finally added a dark theme, which will work automatically in Windows and Mac OS, while on Linux, you will need to add the environment variable CALIBRE_USE_DARK_PALETTE=1 to activate it.
Calibre 5.0 has also expanded document search capabilities, adding new modes, for example, the choice to search for whole words or search using regular expressions.
Not very noticeable to the end user but most labor-intensive was the complete transition to Python 3. Some developers of third-party extensions have done this, but not all. You can check the status of their porting in post on the official forum.
