European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) project (Microsoft Alternatives), a project aimed at moving away from Microsoft products in favor of open source alternatives. Upcoming plans include replacing 'Skype for Business' with a solution based on an open VoIP stack and launching a local email service to transition away from Outlook.
The final selection of open alternatives is not yet complete, with migration expected to be finalized over the next few years. Key requirements for the new software include independence from vendors, complete control over their data, and the use of standardized solutions. Details of the project are set to be announced on September 10.
The decision to transition to open source software came after changes in Microsoft's licensing policy, which had provided CERN with software at significant discounts for educational institutions for the past 20 years. Recently, Microsoft revoked CERN's status as an academic institution, and after the current contract expires, CERN will need to pay full price based on the number of users. Calculations show that costs for purchasing licenses under the new arrangement will increase more than tenfold.
