The ChaosBSD project develops a periodically synchronized fork of FreeBSD, aimed at testing drivers before they are integrated into the main FreeBSD codebase. The project provides a platform for developing and porting new drivers, as well as for testing, trialling, and stabilizing partially functional, unstable, and incomplete drivers whose development status does not allow their inclusion into the main FreeBSD codebase. Once stabilized, these drivers will be ported to FreeBSD.
Four stages of driver advancement are noted: achieving build capability; eliminating bugs and stabilization; conducting cleanup and creating documentation; transferring to the main FreeBSD codebase. ChaosBSD is considered a testing platform, with no guarantee of preserving the history of changes and commits — periodically, the repository is reset, synchronized with the FreeBSD codebase, and the state is restored.
