Collabora has announced the continuation of the libsurvive toolkit, which develops an open implementation of the Lighthouse motion tracking technology for virtual reality systems. The project had been stagnant since 2022. After several years of inactivity, the previous maintainers of libsurvive decided to step away from development entirely and transferred the rights to the GitHub project to Collabora. Two new maintainers, who are employees from Collabora's virtual reality solutions department, have been appointed to oversee the project's further development.
Libsurvive implements position and orientation tracking technology for headsets and VR controllers in 3D space with 6 degrees of freedom (3 position coordinates and 3 orientation angles), using the Lighthouse technology developed by Valve in the SteamVR platform and supported in HTC Vive headsets. The Lighthouse method is based on the use of multiple beacons in a room with infrared lasers that continuously scan the space horizontally and vertically with synchronized pulses. Headsets are equipped with sensors that capture these pulse data and determine the device's position and orientation based on them.
Libsurvive can be used with devices that support the SteamVR 1.0 and SteamVR 2.0 platforms, and can also serve as a driver for motion tracking in the open Monado stack, which provides an implementation of the OpenXR standard. Monado with the Libsurvive driver can be applied in applications that support OpenXR, such as the OpenXR plugin for the Godot game engine. The Libsurvive code is written in C and is distributed under the MIT license.
