The developers of the Linux distribution CuteFishOS, based on a Debian package base, are advancing a new user environment called CuteFish, reminiscent in style of macOS. Mentioned as a friendly project is JingOS, which has a similar interface to CuteFish but is optimized for tablets. The project’s developments are written in C++ using Qt and KDE Frameworks libraries. The code is distributed under the GPLv3 license. The installation builds of the CuteFishOS distribution are not ready yet, but you can test the environment using packages for Arch Linux or by installing an alternative build — Manjaro Cutefish.
For developing components of the user environment, the fishui library is used, which implements an overlay on the set of Qt Quick Controls 2 widgets. Both light and dark themes are supported, along with borderless windows, shadows under windows, blurring of the content of background windows, a global menu, and styles for Qt Quick Control. Window management is handled by the KWin compositing manager with a set of additional plugins.
The project is developing its own taskbars, a fullscreen interface for launching applications (launcher), and a top panel with a global menu, widgets, and a system tray. Among the applications developed by project participants are: a file manager, calculator, and configuration tool.
The CuteFish desktop and the CuteFishOS distribution are primarily developed with a focus on the convenience of novice users, for whom it is more important to provide a set of settings and applications that allows them to start working immediately than to offer deep customization options.
