At the developers' meeting in Cambridge, the issue of phasing out support for 32-bit architecture was discussed. In the interim phase, the 32-bit repository is planned to be maintained, with final support being discontinued. If the plan is approved, changes will already be seen in the release of Debian 13.
The developers plan to gradually discontinue the building of 32-bit kernels and installation programs. Support for i386 will continue as an additional architecture in amd64-based systems (multi-arch) and the launch of the i386 subsystem in chroot. This only applies to x86: Debian continues to support other 32-bit architectures, including Arm and MIPS.
As of today, the following distributions officially maintain 32-bit support:
- Alt Linux
- Gentoo
- Slackware
