In the package with the Chromium browser offered in the Debian distribution, a shift to default usage of the DuckDuckGo search engine instead of Google has been implemented. The proposal to replace the search engine with DuckDuckGo has been considered since April 2020. The reason mentioned is user privacy concerns — the DuckDuckGo service does not use personalized results and cuts out data that can be used to track user preferences and movements. If needed, Google can be restored or any other search engine can be chosen in the settings (‘Settings > Search Engine’).
