At the recent meeting of Debian developers in Cambridge, the gradual phasing out of support for the 32-bit x86 (i386) architecture was discussed. The plans include stopping the formation of official installation builds and packages with kernels for 32-bit x86 systems while maintaining the availability of a package repository and the option to deploy 32-bit environments in isolated containers. There are also plans to continue supplying the multi-arch repository and tools to support the building of 32-bit applications and their execution in a 64-bit x86_64 environment. If approved, this plan could be implemented in Debian 13 'Trixie', scheduled for 2025.
