Developers Debian we launched a platform for communication among project participants and supporters. The aim is to simplify communication and content sharing between the distribution developers.
Debian — an operating system consisting of free open-source software. Currently, Debian GNU/Linux — one of the most popular and significant distributions of GNU/Linux, which has significantly influenced the development of this type of OS in its initial form. There are also projects based on other kernels: Debian GNU/Hurd. Debian can be used as an operating system for both servers and workstations.
Debian has the largest repository of packages among all distributions — ready-to-use programs and libraries — and not only in terms of their number but also in terms of the number of supported architectures: starting from ARM, used in embedded devices, the most common x86-64 and PowerPC, and up to IBM S/390, used in mainframes. Various tools have been developed to work with the repository, the most popular of which is the Advanced Packaging Tool (APT).
Debian has become the foundation for a whole range of distributions. The most well-known among them are Knoppix, Linux Mint, Maemo, SteamOS, TAILS, Ubuntu.
The name 'Debian' is derived from the names of the project's founder Ian Murdock and his wife Debra Lynn.
Within the framework of the program, the following services have been launched:
- pixelfed.debian.social — a platform for sharing photographs
- peertube.debian.social — a decentralized video hosting platform
- jitsi.debian.social — a service for holding web video conferences
- wordpress.debian.social — a platform for developers' blogs
- writefreely — a decentralized platform for blogging and notes
In the future, it is planned to implement a system of messaging on Mattermost, based on Matrix, and a service for sharing audio files based on Funkwhale.
It is worth noting that many of the solutions used are federated and support mutual integration. For example, through an account in Pleroma, it is possible to receive notifications about new videos in Peertube or images in Pixelfed.
To create an account in the services, you need to submit an application at salsa.debian.org, of course with an existing account there. In the future, it is planned to organize authentication directly through salsa.debian.org using the protocol OAuth.
