The Discord platform has officially clarified its updated age verification policy: there will be no mass passport checks or facial scanning. The new age verification system will only affect a small portion of the users, while for the majority, things will remain as they are thanks to smart algorithms.
Discord's administration emphasizes that to lift restrictions, often an automated age prediction system will suffice, based on the information the service already has about the account holder. However, as reported by the publication The Verge, access to servers and channels with age restrictions or the ability to change certain security settings still requires the user to have adult status.
According to the developers' clarification, the platform uses an internal analysis model that evaluates a person's age based on their account data, device information, activity details, and general behavioral patterns in communities. Only in cases where this model cannot accurately or specifically determine age will the user need to verify their age using a real-time selfie or by providing government documents.
For those community members who do not pass the verification or are determined by algorithms to be under 18, a special usage mode has been provided based on a number of restrictions. Such users will not be able to access servers intended for adult audiences and will receive a teen-friendly functional environment. As noted by The Verge, similar age assessment mechanisms using artificial intelligence are already being implemented by other major players in the tech market, including Instagram, YouTube, OpenAI, and Anthropic.
Earlier, we reported, that Discord will begin requiring facial scans or identification for full access to the platform starting next month. Accordingly, all user accounts will be transitioned to access modes corresponding to their age.
