A release of the specialized distribution Tails 6.0 (The Amnesic Incognito Live System) has been formulated, based on the Debian package base and designed for anonymous internet access. Anonymous access in Tails is provided by the Tor network. All connections, except traffic through the Tor network, are blocked by a packet filter by default. User data storage in the data persistence mode between sessions is protected by encryption. An ISO image capable of operating in Live mode, sized at 1 GB, has been prepared for download.
In the new version:
- Transition to the Debian 12 'Bookworm' package base has been completed.
- The user environment has been updated to GNOME 43 (previously version 3.38 was used).
- Warnings are now issued in case of errors when reading or writing to the USB drive used for persistent storage. It is expected that alerts about individual failures will allow problems with the drive to be detected early and enable backing up the persistent storage area.
- Automatic mounting of external storage devices has been implemented. If the drive contains an encrypted partition, for example created with VeraCrypt, a password prompt will be displayed for the user to unlock the partition.
- Protection has been added against system attacks through the connection of malicious USB devices in the user's absence: when the screen is locked, Tails now ignores the connection of any USB devices. USB devices can only be activated when they are connected with the screen unlocked.
- The ability to switch between four themes has been provided: light; dark; light in night mode with warmer colors and lower brightness; and a dark night theme with warm colors.
- The process of creating screenshots and screencasts has been simplified. A shortcut for invoking the screenshot/screencast interface has been added to the system menu.
- In the Thunderbird email client, the process of setting up a Gmail account has been simplified — now it is sufficient to enter the authentication parameters to access Gmail.
- Updated program versions: Tor Browser 13.0.10, Electrum 4.3.4, KeePassXC 2.7.4, Metadata Cleaner 2.4.0, Inkscape 1.2.2, Audacity 3.2.4, GIMP 2.10.34, and Kleopatra 4:22.12.
- The text editor gedit has been replaced with gnome-text-editor.
- The display of icons on the desktop has been discontinued (the GNOME Shell extension responsible for this functionality was removed due to integration issues with new versions of GNOME).
- The secure disk wipe buttons have been removed from the file manager menu, as full erasure cannot be guaranteed for USB drives and SSDs (it is recommended to completely overwrite all data on the drive for secure deletion).
- The metadata deletion button has been removed from the file manager menu, as the library MAT2 used for this purpose no longer provides functionality for integration with the Nautilus file manager.
- The GtkHash utility has been removed from the base installation, but it can be installed as an additional application if desired.
