A mode for automatic spam blocking in push notifications has been proposed for inclusion in the Chromium codebase. It is noted that spam through push notifications is among the most frequently reported complaints to Google support. The proposed protection mechanism will help address the spam issue in notifications and will be applied at the user's discretion. A parameter "chrome://flags#disruptive-notification-permission-revocation" has been implemented to manage the activation of the new mode, which is disabled by default.
Starting with Chrome 84, the browser already provides protections against intrusive notifications, which involve notifying about the request in a non-blocking mode — instead of a separate dialog in the address bar, a non-intrusive informational tooltip is displayed, warning about the blocking of the permission request to send push notifications.
The new mode expands this protection by allowing the automatic revocation of permissions already granted for notification delivery to websites caught in misconduct. Requests for permission to send notifications will also be automatically disabled for violator sites. The blacklisting of sites, based on which blocking is applied, occurs in the case of violations of Google services' usage rules (Developer Terms of Service).
