Rafael Sadowski announced the availability of the KDE Plasma 5.27 desktop environment for installation in OpenBSD-current, the formation of ready-to-install kde-plasma and kde-plasma-extra packages, and the intention to support KDE Plasma in the upcoming OpenBSD 7.5 release. After the end of support for KDE4 in OpenBSD, the ability to use the new branch of the KDE Plasma 5 desktop was not transferred. The packages with KDE Gears 5 applications and KDE Frameworks 5 libraries have long been available in OpenBSD ports, but the shell itself has remained non-functional until now.
To install KDE Plasma and KDE Gear, you now just need to run the following commands: pkg_add kde pkg_add kde-plasma pkg_add kde-plasma-extra
It is noted that the transition of the KDE 6 branch to Qt 6 will not be a major problem for OpenBSD, as during the porting process, the Qt 6 branch and its related dependencies have already been adapted for operation in OpenBSD. Among the remaining tasks is addressing some issues with compositing. proxy server KWin, Wayland, NetworkManager, and SDDM. Support for the pkg_add utility in the application installation interface Discover is also planned.
