Western Digital has developed a driver for the Linux kernel that implements the NVMe PCI Endpoint Function Target. With a compatible PCIe controller supporting endpoint mode, this driver allows a Linux-based system to appear as an NVMe PCI controller, which will be recognized by other systems as an NVMe interface storage device.
For example, such a storage device was implemented based on the Rock5B board, which uses the Rockchip RK3588 SoC with a PCI Gen3x4 controller capable of operating in endpoint mode. When using the null_blk block device in a configuration with 4 input/output queues, the device demonstrated a throughput of 2.8 GB/sec during sequential reading of 512KB blocks and a performance of 131,000 input/output operations per second during random read operations with 4K blocks.
