The Linux Foundation has published its annual report, which states that in 2023, 270 new members joined the organization, and the number of projects overseen by the organization reached 1,133. Over the year, the organization earned $263.6 million and spent $269 million. Compared to last year, the costs for kernel development decreased by nearly $400,000. The total share of expenses related to kernel development among all expenditures is 2.9% ($7.8 million). In comparison, the share of kernel expenses in 2022 was 3.2%, and in 2021 it was 3.4%.
A total of 64% of expenses ($171.8 million) is attributed to various non-kernel projects. The greatest contributions are made to projects related to cloud technologies, containers, and virtualization (25%), as well as network technologies (13%). The shares of expenses by the Linux Foundation for projects related to artificial intelligence, web development, and blockchain were 12%, 11%, and 4%, respectively.
A total of $22.58 million (9%) was spent on maintaining infrastructure, $18.57 million (7%) on training and certification programs, $17.1 million (6%) on corporate operations, $14.6 million (6%) on events, $13.5 million (5%) on community support, and $2.96 million (1%) on international operations.
Regarding income, 45% of all received funds ($118.2 million) came from donations and contributions from organization members; 26% ($67 million) was targeted support for projects; 19% ($49.5 million) was support for events, as well as registration fees for conferences; and 10% ($27.2 million) was for educational course fees and certification.
