The release of the specialized distribution Tails 7.0 (The Amnesic Incognito Live System) has been formed, based on the Debian package base and designed for anonymous internet access. Anonymous access in Tails is provided by the Tor system. All connections, apart from traffic through the Tor network, are blocked by the packet filter by default. User data storage in persistent mode is secured through encryption. An ISO image has been prepared that can operate in Live mode, with a size of 2 GB.
In the new version:
- Transition to the Debian 13 package base has been completed.
- The desktop environment has been updated to GNOME 48 (previously GNOME 43 was used).
- Boot time has been reduced to 10-15 seconds, thanks to the switch from the xz algorithm to zstd for compressing the system image. The price of this acceleration was a decrease in compression efficiency by about 10%. Meanwhile, compared to the Tail 6.x branch, the size of the ISO image has doubled, from 1 to 2 GB, and the minimum RAM requirement in the system has been raised from 2 to 3 GB.
- Updated versions of software include the Linux kernel 6.12.43, Tor Browser 14.5.7, Tor 0.4.8.17, Thunderbird 128.14.0, Electrum 4.5.8, OnionShare 2.6.3, KeePassXC 2.7.10, Kleopatra 4:24.12, Inkscape 1.4, GIMP 3.0.4, Audacity 3.7.3, Text Editor 48.3, Document Scanner 46.0.
- The GNOME Terminal emulator has been replaced with GNOME Console, and the GNOME Image Viewer has been replaced with GNOME Loupe.
- The Places menu has been removed, and users are recommended to use quick access shortcuts in the file manager's sidebar. The application Kleopatra has been removed from the favorites menu.
- The utility unar is no longer supplied (support for the rar format is built into File Roller), the aircrack-ng package (can be installed from the repository), the Power Statistics utility, and the sq package have been discontinued.
