The project labwc 0.5 has been launched, developing a composite server for Wayland with features reminiscent of the Openbox window manager (the project is presented as an attempt to create an alternative Openbox for Wayland). Its features include minimalism, compact implementation, extensive customization options, and high performance. The project's code is written in C and is released under the GPLv2 license.
It uses the wlroots library, developed by the creators of the Sway desktop environment, which provides the basic functions for organizing the work of a compositing manager based on Wayland. Among the extended Wayland protocols supported are wlr-output-management for configuring output devices, layer-shell for desktop shell functionality, and foreign-toplevel for connecting custom panels and window switches.
It is possible to connect add-ons that implement functions such as screenshot creation, wallpaper display, panel and menu placement. Animated effects, gradients, and icons (except for window buttons) are fundamentally not supported. To run X11 applications in a Wayland-based environment, the XWayland DDX component can be used. The theme, basic menu, and hotkeys can be configured via XML configuration files.
In addition to the built-in root menu, configurable through menu.xml, third-party implementations of application menus such as bemenu, fuzzel, and wofi can be connected. Waybar, Uambar, or LavaLauncher can be used as panels. For managing monitor connections and changing their settings, wlr-randr or kanshi is recommended. Screen locking is performed using swaylock.
In the new release:
- Support for high pixel density (HiDPI) displays is provided.
- Rearrangement of elements is ensured when additional output devices are disconnected.
- Settings related to mouse drag event handling have been changed.
- A feature has been added to minimize the window after it has been moved (unmaximize-on-move).
- Support for the taskbar sfwbar (Sway Floating Window Bar) has been added.
- Support for client menus has been implemented.
- The ability to run applications in full-screen mode has been provided.
- An option cycleViewPreview has been added for previewing content while switching between windows using the Alt+Tab interface.
- The ability to bind an action when the mouse cursor moves to the edge of the screen has been added.
- Support for environment variables WLR_{WL,X11}_OUTPUTS, supported in wlroots, has been added.
- Support for control gestures (shift and pinch scaling) has been added.
