The release of Lakka 5.0 has been announced, enabling computers, set-top boxes, or single-board computers to be transformed into a full-fledged gaming console for retro gaming. The project is a modification of the LibreELEC distribution, originally intended for creating home theaters. Lakka builds are available for platforms i386, x86_64 (with Intel, NVIDIA, or AMD GPUs), Raspberry Pi, Orange Pi, Banana Pi, Hummingboard, Cubox-i, Odroid C1/C1+/XU3/XU4, etc. Installation is simple: just write the distribution to an SD card or USB drive, connect a game controller, and boot the system.
At the core of Lakka lies the RetroArch gaming console emulator, which enables the emulation of a wide range of devices and supports advanced features such as multiplayer gaming, save states, enhancement of old game graphics using shaders, rewind functionality, gamepad hot-plugging, and video streaming. Emulated consoles include: Atari 2600/7800/Jaguar/Lynx, Game Boy, Mega Drive, NES, Nintendo 64/DS, PCEngine, PSP, Sega 32X/CD, SuperNES, and more. Gamepads from existing consoles are supported, including Playstation 3, Dualshock 3, 8bitdo, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox 360.
In the new release:
- The system environment has been updated to the LibreELEC 11 package base (the previous branch was based on LibreELEC 10.x).
- The RetroArch package has been updated to version 1.17.
- Versions of emulators and game engines have been updated. New engines included:
- dirksimple - engine for the game Dragon’s Lair
- dosbox-core - DOSBox emulator
- ep128emu - emulator for Enterprise 64/128, Videoton TVC, Amstrad CPC, and ZX Spectrum
- geolith - emulator for Neo Geo AES and MVS Cartridge System

- numero - emulator for the TI-83 calculator
- thepowdertoy - engine for the game The Powder Toy
- vice_xpet - emulator for Commodore PET
- vircon32 - Virtual Game Console
- vitaquake2 - engine for Quake II
- The Mesa package has been updated to version 24.0.4.
- The Linux kernel has been updated to version 6.1 (previously version 5.10 was used).
- Builds for the following devices have been added:
- Raspberry Pi 5, Raspberry Pi Zero 2, Raspberry Pi Compute Module 4.
- OrangePi 4 LTS, OrangePi Zero2, OrangePi 3 LTS.
