Rizal Muttaqin, one of the designers of the LibreOffice suite, published a plan for the potential development of the user interface for LibreOffice 8.0 on his blog. The most notable innovation is the integrated support for tabs, allowing quick switching between different documents, similar to how tabs work in modern browsers.
If necessary, each tab can be detached into a separate window or vice versa, a window can be transformed into a tab. It is also possible to collapse all tabs into a dropdown list available by clicking the â^â button. The header also features a âLibreOfficeâ button, meant to launch the start interface that was previously shown when opening or closing all documents, allowing users to open a file, visually assess recently opened documents, or create a new document based on a template.
Instead of the classic menu bar (File, Edit, View, etc.), a panel with main commands, such as print, is proposed along with tabs for switching between toolbars. All functions from the old menu bar have been moved to a dropdown menu shown when clicking a separate Menu button. The panel also features a new search form that, in addition to document content, encompasses search in commands, comments, and the help system. In the upper right corner, there is a button for quick switching between styles (classic, traditional, and standard).
