The Latin American Free Software Foundation has released the fully free version of the Linux kernel 6.13 — Linux-libre 6.13-gnu, cleaned of firmware elements and drivers containing non-free components or portions of code whose scope is limited by the manufacturer. In Linux-libre, kernel features for loading external non-free components not included with the kernel are also disabled, and references to the use of non-free components have been removed from the documentation.
To clean the kernel of non-free parts, the Linux-libre project has created a universal shell script that contains thousands of templates to identify the presence of binary inserts and exclude false positives. Ready-to-download patches created based on the use of the aforementioned script are also available. The Linux-libre kernel is recommended for use in distributions that meet the Free Software Foundation's criteria for building fully free GNU/Linux distributions. For example, Linux-libre is used in such distributions as Dragora Linux, Trisquel, Dyne:Bolic, gNewSense, Parabola, Musix, and Kongoni.
The Linux-libre 6.13-gnu release includes code for cleaning blobs in the new rtw8812a, rtw8821a, bmi270, aw88081, ntp8835, ntp8918 drivers. Blob names in dts files (device tree) for the Aarch64 architecture have been cleaned up. The code for removing blobs in drivers wilc1000, rt1320, sh4-siu, ivpu, btnxpuart, adreno, and r8169 has been updated, as well as in code related to touchscreen support on x86 architecture systems. The cleaning of drivers rtl8192e, rtl8712, vt6656, and ti-st has been discontinued, as they were removed from the kernel.
