The release of the lightweight MX Linux 23.2 distribution has been published, created through the collaboration of communities formed around the antiX and MEPIS projects. The release is based on the Debian package base with enhancements from the antiX project and packages from its own repository. The distribution uses the sysVinit initialization system and its own tools for system configuration and deployment. Both 32-bit and 64-bit builds (x86_64, i386) with an Xfce desktop (2.3 GB) are available for download, as well as 64-bit builds with a KDE desktop (2.7 GB) and builds (1.8 GB) with the Fluxbox window manager.
In the new release:
- Synchronization with the Debian 12.4 package base has been completed. Application versions have been updated. As in previous releases, the sysVinit initialization system continues to be used by default, while systemd can be installed as an option.
- Multimedia capabilities are enabled. server Pipewire 1.0.
- The installer has been updated, featuring a simplified user interface and the generation of /etc/fstab.
- A new utility called 'MX Locale' has been added to manage system locales and set the default language.
- A new utility, papirus-folder-colors, has been introduced to change the color scheme of directories in Papirus themes.
- In the 'AHS Xfce' build, which provides extended hardware support, Linux kernel 6.6 with liquorix patches, a new version of Mesa, and firmware updates have been implemented.
- The webcamoid camera application in the KDE build has been replaced with kamoso, while in the Xfce and Fluxbox builds, it has been replaced with guvcview.
- The iso images have been enhanced with the addition of the build-essential package, which may be required for compiling drivers.
The release of the AV Linux 23.1 distribution has also occurred, containing a collection of applications for creating/processing multimedia content. This distribution is based on the MX Linux package base and the KXStudio repository with a collection of audio processing applications and additional packages of its own build (Polyphone, Shuriken, Simple Screen Recorder, etc.). The distribution can operate in Live mode and is available for the x86_64 architecture (5.3 GB).
The Linux kernel in AV Linux comes with a set of Liquorix patches to enhance system responsiveness during audio processing tasks. The user environment is provided by Enlightenment. Included are audio editors Ardour, ArdourVST, Harrison, and Mixbus, 3D design software Blender, video editors Cinelerra, Openshot, and LiVES, as well as tools for converting multimedia file formats. The distribution comes with a detailed illustrated guide (PDF, 72 pages).
