Linus Torvalds accepted patches implementing the NTFS file system from Paragon Software into the repository that is forming the future branch of the Linux kernel 5.15. The release of kernel 5.15 is expected in November. The code for the new NTFS driver was opened by Paragon Software last August and differs from the existing driver in its ability to work in write mode. The old driver has not been updated for many years and is in a poor state.
The new driver supports all the features of the current version NTFS 3.1, including extended file attributes, access control lists (ACL), data compression mode, efficient handling of sparse files, and replaying changes from a log to ensure integrity after failures. Paragon Software has confirmed that it is ready to maintain the proposed code in the kernel and plans to further adapt the journaling implementation to work on top of the existing universal block device JBD (Journaling block device), which is the basis for journaling in ext3, ext4, and OCFS2.
