The UBports project, which took over the development of the Ubuntu Touch mobile platform after Canonical distanced itself from it, has released the OTA-24 (over-the-air) firmware update. The project is also developing an experimental desktop port of Unity 8, which has been renamed to Lomiri.
The Ubuntu Touch OTA-24 update is formulated for smartphones BQ E4.5/E5/M10/U Plus, Cosmo Communicator, F(x)tec Pro1, Fairphone 2/3, Google Pixel 2/2 XL/3a/3a XL, Huawei Nexus 6P, LG Nexus 4/5, Meizu MX4/Pro 5, Nexus 7 2013, Asus Zenfone Max Pro M1, OnePlus 2/3/5/6/One, Samsung Galaxy Note 4/S3 Neo+, Sony Xperia X/XZ/Z4, Vollaphone, Xiaomi Mi A2/A3, Xiaomi Poco F1/M2 Pro, Xiaomi Redmi 3s/3x/3sp/4X/7, Xiaomi Redmi Note 7/7 Pro. Separately, updates for Pine64 PinePhone and PineTab devices will be prepared without the label "OTA-24". Compared to the previous version, the list of supported devices has not changed.
Ubuntu Touch OTA-24 is still based on Ubuntu 16.04, but recently, developers' efforts have been focused on preparing for the transition to Ubuntu 20.04. Notable changes in OTA-24 include:
- The waiting time between authentication attempts has increased when unlocking with a fingerprint.
- Initial support for the screen gesture using double tapping to wake devices from sleep has been added.
- A handler for the URL scheme "sms://" has been added to open the messaging app.
- The implementation of the Aethercast protocol used for connecting to external displays via wireless connection has added support for 1080p resolution.
- Bug fixes have been made in the messaging app and the layer handling sms/mms.
- Control buttons for headsets are functional on most supported devices.
- Performance optimization has been made for the Mir-Android-Platform component, which provides the display manager Mir in environments with graphical drivers from the Android platform.
