github-backup is a program for downloading data related to a cloned repository from GitHub: forks, bug tracker content, comments, wikis, milestones, pull requests, and subscriber lists.
Seeing that even what happened with the youtube-dl program, when its repository was blocked along with the bug tracker and pull requests, did little to discourage dependency on GitHub — not even the developer of youtube-dl itself — Joey Hess decided that backing up anything other than source code is of no interest to GitHub users.
At the same time, git repositories source code on GitHub are automatically archived by the site https://softwareheritage.org/, while third-party repositories can only be added there manually, but this function is buggy and does not support automatic updates of copies. It leads to a paradoxical problem: the average GitHub user doesn’t think about backups but receives them, while those who use their own server, perhaps for reliability, do not have automatic archiving, even if their software is in use.
The github-backup site and repository will still be available at https://github-backup.branchable.com/, which the link is right there, but it will need a new maintainer as of December 29.
