A major update to elementary OS 5.1, codenamed 'Hera', is now available. This release is crucial for the project’s development, and the list of changes is quite impressive, prompting the developers to highlight it among other releases with a new name and branding. Nevertheless, the release is still based on the Ubuntu 18.04 LTS codebase.
Among the main changes, the most important are as follows:
- Updated login screen — it has received both a new design and improved integration with the system.
- A new application Onboarding, which familiarizes users with the system, allows for initial setup, and presents the most important updates as they are released.
- Support for Flatpak in the proprietary AppCenter, as well as a new application Sideload, which enables quick and easy installation of flatpak applications from third-party sources (for example, you can now install applications from Flathub with one click directly from your browser!). The move towards using the Flatpak format has been declared a priority for eOS.
- Significant (up to 10 times!) acceleration of the proprietary AppCenter application store.
- Numerous small improvements and fixes in the settings panel, proprietary applications, and the main panel. Notably, improved support for high-resolution screens should be highlighted.
- New vibrant wallpapers, improved icons, and an even more polished visual design.
For users already on elementary OS, simply update the system through AppCenter; for everyone else, installation images are prepared on the project’s website.
