On June 6, 2019, after four years of development, Exaile 4.0.0 was released — an audio player with extensive music management capabilities, extendable by over fifty plugins.

- The playback engine has been rewritten.
- The graphical interface has been rewritten using GTK+3.
- The speed of processing large music libraries has been increased.
- The placement of some buttons in RTL localization has been fixed.
- The tag editor has improved its reaction to mouse scrolling.
- Reading ogg/opus tags has been enhanced.
- A loading indicator for particularly long playlists has been added.
- New playlist columns.
- The gstreamer plugin is now used for decoding mp3.
- The size and position of the track properties dialog window are remembered.
- Display of tags with empty values has been modified.
- Matroska files without timecodescale are supported, and some tags have been fixed.
- In the 'files' panel, when navigating up one level, the previous directory retains focus.
- Searching through the collection and tracklist is performed independently of diacritical marks.
- Breaks during rapid navigation through the menu have been fixed.
- AAC format support.
- Reading of aif, aiff, aifc, and some wav files has been fixed or improved.

- awn, contextinfo, droptrayicon, ipod, exfalso, gnomemmkeys, mpris have been removed. Lyricsviewer, notifyosd, xkeys have transferred their functions to Exaile or built-in plugins. Other plugins have been moved to the new version without proper testing and require close attention.
