Facebook Developers a major update to Facebook Messenger that is said to make the app faster and more user-friendly. It is reported that the year 2019 will be a period of significant changes for the program. The company stated that the new version will focus on data privacy.
It is noted that if the social network were being created today, it would start with a messaging system. This will be implemented through the Lightspeed project, which aims to speed up the app launch and reduce installation space. It is claimed that the app will start in 2 seconds and take up less than 30 MB of space. This will be achieved through rewritten code, meaning the program will essentially be new.
Changes to the application's structure are also promised. For example, a search feature for various materials related to the people you communicate with most frequently will be introduced. However, it is still unclear how this will align with information protection, as this could potentially expose sensitive data. A new capability for simultaneous video watching with other users is also promised.
Similar features will be introduced in the Messenger Desktop clients for Windows and macOS, although the desktop versions will be released later. Timelines for the release are not yet specified.
