Nate Graham, a developer focused on quality control in the KDE project, has published another report on the preparations for the KDE 6 release scheduled for February 28. In addition to bug fixes, the user interface of KDE 6 has been polished over the past week. For instance, the volume sliders on the panel and in the configurator now feature incremental scrolling with a user-configurable volume step instead of changing by 1% with each step.
The ability to move applications and windows from the task manager area to another part of the panel has been disabled to prevent accidental creation of launch widgets. In sessions based on Wayland, support for enabling screen mirroring of two displays with a visible toggle has been implemented in the configurator, allowing this without dragging one screen over another. A preview of cursor images has been established in the configurator.
Performance optimization work has been carried out. The search speed for configuration files used in standard KDE applications has increased by 35-40%. The performance and responsiveness of the System Settings interface have been improved. The launch time of the Discover package manager has been reduced. Compatibility between GPUs and KWin handlers has been enhanced for screencasting, screen sharing, and window thumbnail generation.
Additionally, development continues for the KDE Plasma 6.1 and KDE Gears 6.1 branches, which are being developed in a separate repository in parallel:
- In the KCalc calculator, a display of the corresponding expression entered by the user is now shown next to the result of the calculation.
- The Spectacle screenshot tool interface has added a feature for scanning QR codes and opening the links encoded within them.
- The weather forecast widget has added support for displaying snowfall alerts.
- The configurator's graphics tablet settings page now allows for changing the button parameters of the tablet and stylus to use them as modifiers rather than just for triggering actions.
