After more than a year of development, the first working port of the Firefox browser for the open-source Haiku operating system, which continues to build on the ideas of BeOS, is ready. Ready installation builds are not yet published; those wishing to use Firefox on Haiku are encouraged to build it from source code. Until now, the browsers offered for Haiku were WebPositive, Epiphany, and Falkon, whose use posed difficulties due to some content delivery networks and major websites being overly suspicious of them.
According to one of the Haiku developers, in the early 2000s, enthusiasts of the BeOS operating system became some of the inspirations for creating Firefox. At that time, the Bezilla project was developing a port of the Mozilla Suite package for BeOS. Since the package was too bloated, the BeOS community attempted to create a lightweight version based on it, which kept only the browser and removed all other components such as the email client and web page editor. The developers from Mozilla found the idea worth pursuing and released their own standalone version of the browser under the name Phoenix, later renamed Firebird due to trademark conflicts, and then once again renamed to Firefox due to overlapping with the name of a free database management system.
