The Free Software Foundation has certified the Talos II motherboards.

Free Software Foundation presented new devices that have received the “Respect Your Freedom” certificate, which confirms the device's compliance with the requirements user privacy and freedom requirements, and grants the right to use a special logo in related product materials, emphasizing the provision of full control to users over the device. The FSF also put into operation maintains a separate website for the initiative Respect Your Freedom (ryf.fsf.org), where information about certified hardware can be obtained and necessary code can be downloaded.

The certificate is issued to motherboards Talos II and Talos II Lite, manufactured by Raptor Computing Systems. These are the first motherboards to receive FSF certification, designed to use POWER9 processors. The Talos II board supports the installation of two POWER9 processors and is equipped with
16 DDR4 slots (up to 2TB RAM), 3 PCIe 4.0 x16 slots, two PCIe 4.0 x8 slots, two Broadcom Gigabit Ethernet ports, 4 USB 3.0 ports, one USB 2.0 port, and two RS-232 ports. An optional Microsemi SAS 3.0 controller can be supplied. The Talos II Lite is a simplified single-processor variant, offering fewer DDR4 and PCIe 4.0 slots.

All source texts of the firmware, bootloader, and operating system components are are under a free license. The installed BMC controller on the board is built using the open stack OpenBMC. The boards are also notable for providing support for reproducible builds, ensuring that the firmware on the board is built from the provided source texts (the FSF has verified the identity of the build and published checksums for verification).

To obtain certification from the FSF, the product must meet the following criteria the requirements:

• provision of free drivers and firmware;
• all software supplied with the device must be free;
• absence of DRM restrictions;
• the ability to gain complete control over the device's operation;
• support for firmware replacement;
• support for running fully free GNU/Linux distributions;
• use of unrestricted patent-free formats and software components;
• availability of free documentation.
