The Apache Software Foundation is a nonprofit organization its 21st anniversary. Originally, the organization was created to provide legal and financial support to the developers of the Apache HTTP server, but it later transformed into a neutral and independent platform for the development of a wide range of open projects that use the Apache license, common development rules, principles of meritocracy, and a unified culture of communication.
At the same time, the Apache HTTP server httpd is marking its 25th anniversary, the Apache OpenOffice office suite is celebrating 21 years, and Apache Jakarta, Subversion, and Tomcat are commemorating 20 years.
The number of projects developed under the Apache umbrella has exceeded 350 (with 45 in the incubator), covering areas such as machine learning, big data processing, build management, cloud systems, content management, DevOps, IoT, mobile application development, server systems, and web frameworks.
Development is overseen by more than 7,600 committers. The number of participants supporting the foundation has grown from 21 to 765 over 21 years. The combined estimated cost of developing 300 Apache projects, which consist of more than 200 million lines of code, is valued at $20 billion based on COCOMO 2 cost estimation model.
