FreePN is a P2P implementation of a distributed virtual private network (dVPN) that creates an anonymous "cloud" of peer nodes, where each peer node acts as both a client node and an exit node. Peer nodes connect randomly upon startup and reconnect to new (random) peer nodes as needed.
The FreePN user interface (freepn-gtk3-tray) currently supports XDG-compliant environments based on GTK3, such as Gnome, Unity, XFCE, and their derivatives.
FreePN is not a full-fledged VPN (such as openvpn or vpnc) and does not require the setup of any prior shared keys or certificates. Traffic over FreePN network links is always encrypted; however, since each network link is independent, traffic must be decrypted when exiting each peer host. In "peer-to-peer" mode, every peer node is treated as an untrusted host; in "adhoc" mode, nodes can be considered trusted (since they belong to the user). Thus, a user engaging in illegal activities compromises a random exit node. The difference from TOR and commercial VPNs is that exit nodes generally know what they are doing.
Restrictions
- only www traffic (http and https) and dns (optional) is routed
- traffic routing only supports IPv4
- DNS privacy entirely depends on your DNS configuration
- the most common DNS configuration for local networks does not support routing out of the box
- you need to make changes to prevent DNS privacy leaks
