The formation of experimental builds of the new FuryBSD Live distribution, based on FreeBSD 12.1 and the Xfce desktop, has begun. The project was founded by Joe Maloney, who works at iXsystems, which oversees TrueOS and FreeNAS. However, FuryBSD is positioned as an independent community-supported project, not affiliated with iXsystems.
The Live image can be written to both DVD and USB flash. There is a stationary installation mode that transfers the Live environment with all changes to the disk (using bsdinstall and installation on a partition with ZFS). UnionFS is used to ensure writing in the Live system. Unlike builds based on TrueOS, the FuryBSD project is designed for close integration with FreeBSD and the use of the main project’s developments but optimized for desktop settings and environments.
Future plans include preparing tools for loading proprietary graphics and wireless drivers, creating a utility for replicating and restoring ZFS partitions, providing quality support for printing, ensuring that changes are saved between reboots when working from a USB drive, supporting connections to Active Directory and LDAP, creating an additional repository, and enhancing security measures.
