The release of version 2.48 of the distributed version control system Git, written in C and distributed under the GNU GPL 2 license, has taken place.
List of major changes:
- The new configuration variable remote..serverOption has the same effect as if the option --serverOption= were specified from the command line.
- The git rebase --rebase-merges command now uses branch names as labels when possible.
- The git notes add and git notes append commands with the new -e flag open notes in $GIT_EDITOR before saving.
- Improved documentation for git bundle regarding the use of --all when creating bundles.
- Support for older versions of libcURL and Perl has been removed.
- The operation of git mergetool has been improved when encountering command errors.
- The git bundle --unbundle and git clone commands run for a bundle file now invoke fsck for new objects with customizable fsck verification levels.
- If git fetch $remote detects that refs/remotes/$remote/HEAD is missing and indicates which branch the other side's HEAD points to, refs/remotes/$remote/HEAD is updated to point to it.
- git fetch now respects the remote..followRemoteHEAD settings for tracking HEAD in refs/remotes//HEAD.
- Support for the --diff-merges option has been added to git range-diff for comparing merge commits in the compared ranges.
- The reftable subsystem has been improved.
- Support for compiling with more efficient implementations of the SHA-1 algorithm instead of the currently used algorithm has been added. SHA1DC with collision detection ($ make OPENSSL_SHA1_UNSAFE=1 or $ make BLK_SHA1_UNSAFE=1).
- Compatibility with the C23 standard and GCC 15 has been improved.
- git describe has been optimized.
- Added the ability to compile with the Meson build system.
- Other improvements and bug fixes.
