The initiative to transform GNOME OS from a distribution for GNOME testers and developers into a general-purpose distribution suitable for daily use by regular users has entered a new phase. Nightly builds of GNOME OS are now ready for testing by developers and advanced users. The primary goal of the testing is to refine the system while using GNOME OS on real hardware as the main OS.
GNOME OS utilizes the systemd-sysupdate component for atomic system updates and the flatpak package format for installing additional software. A prototype installer is being used, which currently lacks some expected functionalities. The size of the downloadable ISO image is 1.9 GB.
To encourage testing of GNOME OS, a contest has been established, where the winner will receive a OnePlus 6 smartphone running a postmarketOS-based firmware. The user with the highest score will be declared the winner, with points awarded as follows: 10 points for daily use of GNOME OS on the primary computer for at least 4 weeks; 1 point for each valid bug report; 3 points for each accepted request to include changes; and 5 points for each problem fixed that was submitted in the bug tracking system.
