A change has been made in the codebase used for the spring release of GNOME 48, transitioning the desktop environment to use the Adwaita Sans font by default. Since 2010, GNOME has used the Cantarell font, and the need for a replacement arose due to stagnation in development and maintenance issues.
The new Adwaita Sans font is based on the Inter font, specifically designed for use in user interfaces and optimized for high clarity of characters at small to medium sizes (less than 12px) when displayed on computer screens. Unlike Cantarell, a large community has formed around the Inter project, continuing to develop the font, addressing shortcomings, implementing new typographic features, and testing display quality for various languages and screen types.
In contrast to Inter, Adwaita Sans enhances the distinction between the uppercase letter 'I' and the lowercase 'l'. Meanwhile, a similar display for the letter 'O' and the number '0' continues to be used by default in Adwaita Sans (to display the number 0 with a dot in the middle, you can set the 'ss02' mode in the font-feature-settings property, supported in GTK).
