On July 5th, the release of a new stable version of the operating system bootloader GRUB from the GNU project took place. This bootloader complies with the Multiboot specification, supports a wide range of platforms, and is one of the most widely used bootloaders for Linux-based operating systems. It is also capable of booting many other operating systems, including Windows, Solaris, and BSD family OSes.
The new stable version of the bootloader differs from the previous one (version 2.02 was released on April 25, 2017) by a large number of changes, among which the following should be highlighted:
- Support for RISC-V architecture
- Native support for UEFI Secure Boot
- Support for F2FS filesystem
- Support for UEFI TPM 1.2/2.0
- Various improvements for working with Btrfs, including experimental support for Zstd and RAID 5/6
- Support for GCC 8 and 9 compilers
- Support for Xen PVH virtualization
- Built-in support for DHCP and VLAN in the bootloader
- A multitude of various improvements for working with arm-coreboot
- Early loading of multiple Initrd images (Multiple Early Initrd Images) before loading the main image.
Many different bugs have also been fixed.
