On January 16, a major release of GNU Guile was announced — an embedded implementation of the Scheme programming language with support for multithreading, asynchronous operations, networking, and POSIX system calls, a binary interface for C, PEG parsing, network REPL, and XML; it features its own object-oriented programming system.
The main feature of the new version is full support for JIT compilation, which allows applications to run, on average, twice as fast, and up to thirty-two times faster in the mbrot benchmark. Compared to the previous stable version's Guile virtual machine, the instruction set has become more low-level.
Compatibility with the Scheme programming language standards R5RS and R7RS has also improved, with the addition of support for structured exceptions and interleaved declaration and expression within a lexical context. The Scheme eval performance has matched that of its C counterpart; a unified set of tools for different Record type implementations has been provided; classes in GOOPS are no longer overridden; details and other changes can be read in the release announcement.
The new stable branch of the language is now 3.x. It is installed alongside the previous stable branch 2.x.
