Google Assistant for the Android platform is becoming more useful for people with vision impairments, as well as for those learning foreign languages. Developers have added the ability for the assistant to read web page content aloud.
Google states that the new feature combines many of the company's advancements in speech technology. As a result, this function operates more naturally compared to standard text-to-speech tools. To start using the new feature, one only needs to say, 'Okay, Google, read this' while viewing a web page. During reading, the virtual assistant will highlight the spoken text. Additionally, as it reads, the page will automatically scroll down. Users can adjust the reading speed and navigate from one part of the page to another without needing to read the entire text.
The new feature will be useful for people learning foreign languages. For instance, if a viewed page is displayed in the user's native language, they can have the virtual assistant translate it into one of 42 supported languages. Google Assistant will not only translate the page into the chosen language in real-time but will also vocalize the translation.
The new 'read this' feature in Google Assistant has already begun to roll out widely. It will soon be available to all users of Android devices.
