Google has announced the acquisition of Cameyo, a company developing a remote application service (VAD — Virtual App Delivery) that allows for the execution of programs in the cloud, which can be provided by a third-party vendor or run on its own servers. The reason for the acquisition is said to be the intention to integrate Cameyo's technology into the Chrome OS ecosystem, enabling the use of applications created for other platforms. For example, Chrome OS users will have the ability to run applications designed for the Windows platform, and there is support for cloud-based execution of Linux applications for platforms other than Linux.
Unlike virtualization systems, VAD technology does not consume local system resources (running Windows applications does not require launching a full Windows environment in virtual machine) and is based on the translation of input and output over the network, providing seamless integration of the cloud-based application with the current user environment. For example, on user systems with Chrome OS, cloud applications support integration with the local file system and clipboard, with input and output translated through the browser, while the virtual application is delivered as a PWA (Progressive Web App).
On the cloud service side, a shared environment is created where individual Windows or Linux applications can run in isolation. This approach simplifies infrastructure management and allows users to access their applications from any device using a browser.
