One of the main problems when working with Microsoft Office files in Google Docs will soon be resolved. The search giant has announced the addition of built-in support for native Word, Excel, and PowerPoint formats on its platform.
Previously, to edit data, collaborate, comment, and more, it was necessary to convert documents to Google format, although they could be viewed directly. Now, that will change. The list of formats looks like this:
- Word: .doc, .docx, .dot;
- Excel: .xls, .xlsx, .xlsm, .xlt;
- PowerPoint: .ppt, .pptx, .pps, .pot.
As reported, the new feature will initially be available to corporate G Suite users, with availability rolling out over the next couple of weeks. It will then become accessible to regular users.
As stated by G Suite Vice President of Product Management David Thacker, users work with various formats and data, making this support quite expected. This will allow users to work with Office files directly from G Suite without worrying about conversion.
Thacker also noted that users will be able to utilize G Suite's artificial intelligence system for grammar checking in text. Interestingly, similar capabilities were previously introduced in Dropbox, where Business version users can edit documents, spreadsheets, and images directly within the cloud interface.
Thus, Microsoft and Google products are becoming increasingly compatible with each other. However, given the release of Chromium-based Microsoft Edge beta versions, this does not come as a surprise. Note that this browser is available for download and is actively updated, gaining new features.
