Google has simplified the task of photographing receipts and other documents on smartphones. Continuing the development of the intelligent feature introduced last year in Google Photos, which offers automatic image processing, the company has introduced a new feature called 'Crop and Adjust' for capturing printed documents and text pages.
The functionality operates similarly to the implementation of suggested actions in Google Photos. After taking a photograph, the platform will identify the document and suggest automatic corrections. Then a new editing interface opens, optimized for documents, where automatic cropping, rotation, and color correction are performed, allowing you to remove backgrounds and clean up edges to enhance readability.
As seen in the attached image, the algorithm struggles to recognize lines of text and aligns based on the edges of the document rather than its content.
Similar functionality is offered by many Android applications, including Microsoft Office Lens—though their effectiveness varies. However, it is very useful to have this feature directly in Google Photos, especially considering that quick access to receipts is becoming increasingly in demand in applications and services.
The new 'Crop and Adjust' feature will arrive on Android devices this week as part of the latest update to the built-in photo management application on mobile devices.
