Google has made it easy to take photos of invoices and other documents with your smartphone. Building on last year's smart feature in Google Photos that offers automatic image processing, the company has introduced a new "Crop and Adjust" feature for snapshots of printed documents and text pages.
The principle of operation is very similar to the implementation of the recommended actions in Google Photos. After taking a photo, the platform will detect the document and offer automatic correction. It then opens up a new document-optimized editing interface that automatically crops, rotates and color-corrects the image, removes the background, and cleans up the edges to improve readability.
As you can see in the attached image, the algorithm doesn't recognize lines of text well and does alignment based on the edges of the document rather than its content.
Similar functionality is offered by many Android-apps, including Microsoft Office Lens—their performance naturally varies. However, having this feature directly in Google Photos is very useful, especially given that quickly receiving receipts is becoming increasingly popular across apps and services.
