Google representatives released their annual security and privacy report today. They noted that despite the increase in downloads of potentially dangerous apps, the overall state of the ecosystem is Android improved.
The share of dangerous apps downloaded to Google Play in 2017 increased from 0,02% to 0,04% during the period under review. If click fraud cases are excluded from the statistics, a significant decrease in the number of potentially dangerous downloads can be seen. The report also notes that the company faces the challenging task of protecting over 2 billion devices running AndroidIt is noted that Google Play Protect, an AI system developed in 2017 and capable of scanning over 50 billion apps daily, has made a significant contribution to improving user security. The system will be further developed, becoming an increasingly sophisticated tool for combating malicious software. It is worth noting the overall decline in the number of dangerous app installations. In 2018, this figure was 0,45% of the total, while the previous year it was 0,56%.
Despite the efforts made to protect devices on AndroidMalware continues to appear on Google Play, changing publishers and names. It's not uncommon for a dangerous app to be blocked only after millions of users have downloaded it. Hopefully, Google will continue to actively work on securing Android devices in the future.
