Today, Google announced the implementation of W3C WebAuth support for Google accounts on Apple devices running iOS 13.3 and above. This enhances the usability of Google’s hardware encryption keys on iOS and allows for more types of security keys to be used with Google accounts.
With this innovation, iOS users can now utilize the Google Titan Security Key with NFC to log into their personal accounts. USB keys like the YubiKey 5Ci can also be used with iOS devices, but require the Apple Lightning to USB Camera adapter. Keys with a Type-C connector can be directly connected to iOS devices with the appropriate port, such as the iPad Pro.
According to Google, using a Security Key provides far more reliable access protection than two-factor authentication, since access to the account can only be obtained through a physical key, rather than using a simple digital code that experienced hackers can guess.
