The Live distribution grml 2026.09 has been released, offering a selection of tools for tasks encountered in system administrator practice, such as data recovery after failure and incident analysis. The distribution is based on the Debian GNU/Linux package base and celebrated its twentieth anniversary last year. The graphical environment is built using the Fluxbox window manager. By default, the Zsh shell is provided. The full ISO image size is 1.1 GB, while the slimmed version is 643 MB. Builds are available for x86_64 and ARM64 architectures.
In the new release:
- Transition to Debian 14 (Testing) package base and Linux kernel 7.1.8 has been completed.
- Support for operating in chroot environments without the pseudo-filesystem /proc has been removed from the grml-live build system, intended for creating custom Live builds. User namespace identifiers (user namespace) are used to isolate grml-live.
- The GNU Screen terminal window manager has been updated to version 5.0.1, which is not configuration-compatible with the 4.x branch.
- The exfat module for booting from USB drives with ExFAT filesystem has been added to the initial RAM disk initramfs.
