Shortly after the release of Ubuntu 23.10, users encountered difficulties downloading the desktop edition builds of the distribution, which were removed from the download servers due to an emergency replacement of the installation images. The replacement was triggered by an incident in which a vandal managed to insert offensive anti-Semitic expressions and profanity into the files with the Ukrainian language translations of the installer messages (translation). An investigation has been initiated into how these malicious translations were able to pass checks and get into the final installation builds of Ubuntu.
The first act of vandalism occurred three weeks ago and went unnoticed, after which two more changes were made three days before the release. The translation was added through the Weblate system, which was used to coordinate the work of translators in separate applications, including the new installer.
Developers believe that the incident was limited to translations outside the Ubuntu Archive. Around midnight (MSK), the malicious changes were removed, and a decision was made to conduct an unscheduled rebuild of the images, during which the installation builds of Ubuntu Desktop 23.10 and Ubuntu Budgie 23.10, as well as daily builds of Ubuntu Desktop, became unavailable for download.
