Starting from the release of Fedora 42, scheduled for spring next year, it has been proposed to form official Spin builds of the distribution with the COSMIC desktop environment, developed in Rust. The proposal has not yet been considered by the FESCo (Fedora Engineering Steering Committee), which is responsible for the technical aspects of Fedora's development.
COSMIC is being developed by System76 as a universal project not tied to a specific distribution and compliant with Freedesktop specifications. The interface in COSMIC is built using the Iced library, which employs safe types, a modular architecture, and a reactive programming model. The project is also developing its own compositor server cosmic-comp based on Wayland. In addition to using Rust, COSMIC features hybrid tiled window layout and stackable window docking modes (grouping windows similar to tabs in a browser), which can be enabled in conjunction with virtual desktops. The first stable release of COSMIC is planned for the first quarter of 2025.
Additionally, the Fedora project developers announced the formation of a new working group, Btrfs SIG (Special Interest Group), which will oversee issues related to the use and promotion of Btrfs file system support in the distribution. The group will also be responsible for maintaining the packages related to Btrfs, which were previously supported by scattered enthusiasts. Btrfs offers features such as separately mountable subvolumes that use shared disk space, snapshots for state capture with the ability to separately save differences, transparent data compression, input/output operation isolation via cgroups2, RAID, deduplication, load balancing across block devices, integrity checks via checksums, and dynamic resizing of partitions.
