Fedora Linux Developers on forming the Minimization Team, which will work with package maintainers to to reduce the installation size of delivered applications, runtime, and other components of the distribution. The size is planned to be reduced by ceasing to install unnecessary dependencies and eliminating optional components, such as documentation.
Reducing the size will allow for smaller application containers and specialized builds for Internet of Things devices.
It is noted that in its current form, the size of the base image of Fedora is almost three times larger than similar images from Ubuntu, Debian, and openSUSE projects (300 MB vs. 91-113 MB). The main reason for the increased installation size is the dependencies, which could have been avoided. Reducing dependencies will not only optimize the size of the minimal environment but also enhance overall security and reduce attack vectors by excluding unnecessary code.
To reduce dependencies, an analysis of the dependency tree for typical and frequently used applications is planned, which will help identify which dependencies can be excluded due to lack of use and which might make sense to break down into parts. The possibility of providing special modes for reducing the size of installed applications is also being considered, for example, by ceasing to install documentation and usage examples.
Additionally, it can be noted
the FESCo committee (Fedora Engineering Steering Committee), responsible for the technical part of the Fedora distribution development, to postpone consideration of ceasing the formation of main repositories for the i686 architecture.
The committee will return to this issue two weeks before the package base freezes ahead of the beta release or after studying the possible negative impact of stopping the supply of packages for i686 on local module builds.
