Intel Corporation has announced the acquisition of Linutronix, a company developing technologies for the use of Linux in industrial systems. In particular, Linutronix oversees the development of the RT branch of the Linux kernel ("Realtime-Preempt", PREEMPT_RT or "-rt"), aimed at applications in real-time operating systems. The position of Chief Technology Officer at Linutronix is held by Thomas Gleixner, the main developer of PREEMPT_RT patches and maintainer of the x86 architecture in the Linux kernel.
It is noted that the acquisition of Linutronix reflects Intel's commitment to supporting the Linux kernel and its related community. Intel will provide the Linutronix team with more opportunities and resources. After the deal is finalized, Linutronix will continue to operate as an independent business within Intel's software development division.
